Sales of electric bikes across Brazil have broken records even before 2021 is over, according to survey data released by Alianca Bike, an industry association. A total of 35,722 e-bikes were sold from January to October this year, exceeding the total of 32,110 sold in 2020, according to statistics.
Sales figures for November and December have not yet been calculated, Brazil's G1 website reported on December 9. The association expects e-bike sales to rise to 43,000 units by the end of this year, up 34 percent from 2020.
Daniel Guth, executive director of Alianca Bike, said: "The misinformation about e-bikes has been cleared up and more and more companies are now running the business." Most electric bikes in Brazil are still imported, but the number of locally made bikes is also growing.
While e-bike sales are on the rise, the segment still has a lot of room to grow, according to the industry. "Proportionally, it's still a small part of the market, about 1 per cent of total bike sales," Mr Goose says. The current figures are well below potential."
In addition to higher sales, local assembly of such vehicles has also increased this year compared with imports. Alianca Bike said one reason for the change was increased investment in the Bike market by merged brands and reduced government taxes on various components.
"Imagine importing an entire e-bike, you pay an 18 percent import tax," Guth said. If you import components, you pay 14.4 per cent. If the brand does not have a factory in Brazil, the rate could fall to 0 per cent. As a result, it is becoming more and more advantageous for those who sell e-bikes in bulk to assemble them in Brazil."
Many Brazilians have embraced e-bikes as part of their daily commute to avoid traffic jams or crowded public transport. Data from a survey by Alianca Bike showed that 56% of e-bike riders had previously used a car as a means of transportation.
